In order to drive a vehicle fitted with a digital or smart tachograph while carrying goods and passengers, the driver must hold a driver card.

The driver card identifies the driver and is used to store work and rest period data of the respective driver while driving a vehicle fitted with a digital tachograph. A person may possess only one valid driver card.

A driver card is valid for 5 years (the validity period of the driver card is not subject to the validity period of the driving licence), except in cases involving foreign nationals and their residence permits that may reduce the validity period of the driver card.

The guaranteed time frame for the initial issue or renewal of a driver card is 1 month from the date of receipt of the application and payment.

Documents for renewal of the card must be submitted not earlier than 3 months before the expiry date of the card.

If the card is lost, stolen, damaged or faulty, a new card is issued within 8 working days from the date of receipt of the application and/or the payment.

Documents to be submitted:

  • an application;
  • a copy of the passport or ID (identification card);
  • a copy of the driving licence;
  • a 45 x 35 mm photograph which is not older than 3 months.
